She was the captain of the cheer team, and, when the season ended, seized the opportunity to be in the play with Fang. Everyone knew that Amber still had a thing for him and hadn't completely given up on her pursuits, but Fang seemed oblivious to her intentions. She and Fang had dated for a few months but had broken up just a few weeks ago. She looked at Fang and smiled, her eyes brimming with ravished delight. "I think he's doing fine," Amber interjected. "Tone it down? How about not doing all that at all?" "Stop inventing your own moves and just do what you've been told! You don't need to be so dramatic– this isn't an action movie!" "What are you doing, Fang?" she demanded. She waved her arms in an angry, dramatic gesture and stomped toward the middle of the stage where Fang was, her heels clicking loudly against the stage with each step. The director stood to the side, watching. They sat together in History, and, every time they conversed, Janet fell a little harder for him.Īt the moment, he was rehearsing a scene on stage with Amber, who was playing the Baker's Wife. She loved the way he talked about his dreams, his easygoing sense of humor, and his charming manner. If only Fang knew how long Janet had been crushing on him.

Janet and Fang were acquaintances but not quite friends. He played the part of the Baker with more passion than everyone else in the cast combined. The only reason she wasn't losing her mind was Fang– she loved watching him on stage when he was on. She was supposed to be going over her lines when she wasn't on stage but usually ended up going on her phone or staring into space. In reality, she spent most of the hours during rehearsal sitting in the front row of the auditorium watching run-throughs of other scenes. She imagined the night of the show, where she would bask in glory as the audience praised her performance as Cinderella. She had been excited at the prospect of rehearsing choreography and singing every day after school. It was only a week into play practice for Into the Woods, and Janet was already bored.
